Perl is a stable, cross platform programming language. It is used for mission critical projects in the public and private sectors and is widely used to program web applications of all needs.
One of the most important critiques moved against Perl, is that the semantic and syntax are too complex, and not very orthogonal.
Perl's motto is that everything can be done in multiple ways, while other programming languages stress the design goal: only one way to do one thing.
On the other hand the language is very powerfull, and full of ready to use libraries.
